Candoni Merlot and Papa Murphy's Pizza

The weather here in Houston has been wet and so lately. We have been getting a lot of rain! So, I had what I call a rainy day meal today; something easy and typically not all that healthy. Especially, when I have no groceries, it is my excuse to order in or find something really easy....like pizza. Papa Murphy's is new to my neighborhood but I have heard great things about them so I decided to give them a try. For those of you not familiar with Papa Murphy's, they are handmade pizzas, made to order but cooked by you. So, they make the pizza and then you go home and make it. I am glad I tried them out.

Whenever I think pizza, I think Italian wine! I love a good Chianti but I decided to go with an Italian Merlot tonight. Tonight's pairing was Candoni Organic Merlot. I see the Candoni brand often but I have never given it a try. With my Merlot, I tried the Papa Murphy's pepperoni and hamburger beef pizza. I am always in search of A PERFECT PAIRING and this one was GOOD. Not perfect but the two definitely went well together.

This Merlot is smooth and easy drinking; a great everyday wine. People ask me all of the time about organic wines. So what does it really mean to be "organic"? Organic is a certification and the criteria is different based on the country. Organic wine is wine made from grapes grown in accordance with principles of organic farming, which typically excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Here in the US, the United States Department of Agriculture sets the standard and criteria of organic foods, including organic wines. In agricultural production, chemical fertilizers are often used to promote larger yields and prevent diseases. Organic wine certification of wine is complex and some wineries that are organic choose not to be organic for various reasons.

If you are looking for a wine that is Organic Certified, this wine is a very good option. It is very reasonably priced at around $9 per bottle and can be paired with many different foods due to its light body and soft tannins.
